Mark Kenny is Fairfax Media's chief political correspondent and has written an opinion piece on Sunday titled ‘The West's blind support for Israel has done it no favours’. I will speak with Mark about his article and discuss what portends with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s visit to Australia this week.

WHEN Dan Layani’s platoon was hit by a massive bombardment during the first Lebanon War in 1982, he immediately and instinctively knew he had been permanently blinded by shrapnel. Now married with four children, Dan is assistant chairman of the Jerusalem District of ZDVO, supporting wounded soldiers and helping veterans with issues such as job discrimination, socioeconomic problems and medical matters.

Layani will be visiting Melbourne this week to spread awareness of ZDVO activities and to fundraise for Beit Halochem rehabilitation centres.

Joining Layani will be Israeli Paralympian rower Moran Samuel, who, having suffered a spinal stroke in 2006, went on to win bronze at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.

This Wednesday February 15th 4-5 pm:
There are few moments in history that create the destiny of a nation. For Israel, one of those moments was 1917. Barry Shaw, Senior Associate for Public Diplomacy at the Israel Institute for Strategic Studies has written a new book titled ‘1917: From Palestine to the Land of Israel’, which recalls the spirit of Zionism, a spirit of self-sacrifice and determination that led to the eventual birth of Israel. I will talk with Barry about the embryonic stage of the struggle for Palestine in a book which draws the reader back a century into a kaleidoscope of swirling events that was to change our world. Among the remarkable cast of characters were Lawrence of Arabia, General Edmund Allenby, Lord Arthur Balfour, Richard Meinertzhagen, Aaron and Sarah Aaronsohn, Ze'ev Jabotinsky, Chaim Weizmann, Joseph Trumpeldor, Colonel John Patterson, Prince Feisal, Winston Churchill, David Ben-Gurion, and the Three Pashas.
The Technion Society of Australia (NSW) aims to establish a lasting relationship between Australian society and the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, supporting the Technion in its mission to be at the forefront of the global network of science and technology, to be Israel's top facility for science and technology and to be a centre of excellence in technical education, producing leaders with strong professional ethics and sensitive to social and environmental issues. Their activities include lectures by visiting Technion academics; academic and student exchange programs (including supporting scholarships); fostering links between Australian business and the Technion; an Australian Technion alumni group; and fundraising. I speak with their newly appointed national executive director Hilary May Black.
